What is the NDIS?
1. What is the NDIS?
The Australian Government has created the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) to help people with disabilities to live a full and meaningful life. This might mean being able to live independently, learn, work or be more involved in their community.
2. How the NDIS could help you?
If you have a disability or are caring for someone who has a disability, the NDIS could provide the support you need.
The NDIS provides money to people under 65 who have a permanent and significant disability to pay for services, equipment and supports so they can live their best life. It also supports their families and other people who care for them.
The NDIS can also help with getting access to services.
You should think and talk about what kind of things, including services, you need to live a better life with your disability. It’s a good idea to talk to your family, friends and other people in your community.
There are different people in your community who work for the NDIS:
- Local Area Coordinator (or LAC)
- Community Connector
- Early Childhood Early Intervention partner.
A Local Area Coordinator or Community Connector can help you find activities in the community and support services.
Early Childhood Early Intervention (or ECEI partner) helps children with disability or developmental delay under the age of 7.
3. What is the NDIA?
The NDIA is the National Disability Insurance Agency.
It is a government agency and its role is to implement and manage the NDIS and make sure people with disability continue to get the support they need.
4. How will my funding be managed?
There are 3 different ways you can manage your NDIS plan.
You don’t have to choose only one of these options. You can use a combination.
For example, you might self-manage some parts of your plan while the NDIA may look after other parts.
The three options are:
- Your plan is managed by someone from the NDIA
- Your plan is managed by a Plan Manager
- You manage your NDIS plan
5. Who will be eligible for the NDIS? Can I access eligibility checklist?
Eligibility for the NDIS depends on a few different things such as:
- Location: You need to have been living in an area where the scheme is already rolled out
- Age: You need to be under 65 years at the time of your application
- Residency: You need to be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or a New Zealand citizen who holds a Protected Special Category Visa
- Disability: You must have a permanent disability that significantly affects how you can communicate, move, care for yourself, or manage your life.
- Early Intervention: You might be eligible if early intervention would substantially improve your functioning, or delay or decrease a decline in functioning, for you or your child.
